History
|
Somerford Business Court was originally part of the Somerford estate owned by Sir Walter Shakerley. Sold off in 1926 it became Somerford Farm. The farm was run as both a Dairy and Arable farm, producing crops such as: potatoes, wheat, barley, oats and cabbage, and was in-fact one of the first UK farms to own an automated potato harvester.
The first cattle on the farm were shipped over from Ireland and were regularly milked in the courtyard barns. In 1949 Somerford Farm installed an electric milking machine into the barns. To this day the only major structural addition to these barns is the dairy and the dividing interior walls which were built in the early 1950's to separate TB tested cattle from un-tested cattle.
As Somerford has been passed down from generation to generation it
has seen and responded to the many changes which have affected British
farming. However, with the changes in this profession, and the difficult
financial climate created from these changes, Somerford has had the
foresight to diversify into new business opportunities and to create
a new vision for the future...
